The predecessor of PS3 and successor of PlayStation; PlayStation2, which is often referred as PS2 is the video game console of sixth generation video game, manufactured by Sony. This console is the part of the video game series of Play Station. In 1999, the development of this console was announced and was released in the markets after a year, in Japan. The primary competitors of PlayStation2 were Dreamcast, Xbox and GameCube of Sega, Microsoft and Nintendo, respectively.

The software library of this console has exceeded 1900 games, in the year of 2009. By the end of 2000 only few million of people were able to purchase gaming consoles, the reason was delayed production of the consoles and due to this delayed production, it was very difficult to find PS2 on the shelves of the retailers. An available option for the purchase of PS2 was different auction websites over Internet like ebay, from where people use to purchase these consoles, for about more than 1000 dollars. The selling of PS2 have been very successful and the reason was the strength and popularity of the brand name; "PlayStation". It has the best and most efficient backward compatibility. By March 2000, right after one day of the launch of PS2 more than 980,000 units were sold in Japan. Later on, Sony added more PS2 units and development kits for the game developers for the consumers.
A popular television commercial; PS9 launched the advertising campaign for the purpose of PS2’s launch. The same commercial was also used to presage the development of the PlayStation Portable, which was released in Japan, on 12th December 2004. Many analysts believe that there is a relationship between PS2 and its two strong competitors, Xbox and GameCube of Microsoft and Nintendo, respectively. Several other games released during the year of 2001, which maintained highest sales momentum in the holiday season and in this way the rivals of PS2 were held off.
Sony did not put sheer concentration on online games during the earlier years, like Sega did with Dreamcast, but later on Sony introduced and released PlayStation Network Adapter, in the year of 2002. It was introduced for the purpose of competing with Microsoft and other titles, which were released alongside including SOCOM. It resulted in the demonstration of active and efficient Internet game playing. The online model of Sony was very well advertised and Electronic Arts also supported it. The online gaming attempt, which was conduct of online gamin, by Sony, became the only reason of highest selling of the PS2.
PS2 went through different hardware revisions. Some of them only focused on internal changes, but many focused on external changes. PS2 hardware hackers have colloquially known these changes.
Sony manufactured and released the PSX, which was a consumer device. This device can be used as a digital video recorder and for the burning of DVD, apart from playing games of PS2 games. This device was only released in the Japanese markets on 13th December 2003. It was then never released anywhere else in the world, but it can still be found in few Sony Style shops, which are located in some countries. This system has been considered as a rare product and now it is being sold on eBay for $500.
