Dreamcast; Amazing Game By Sega
Dreamcast is the part of sixth generation of video games, which was introduced by Sega, as its last game console. This console is the successor of Sega Saturn. It was released in the year of 1998. Sega, in the markets of North America discontinued this console, in November 2001 and ultimately discontinued it entirely from the hardware business, but in the countries of Europe and Oceania, the support for this console used to be delivered until 2002 and in Japan as well, where this console was sold till the year of 2006. Bernie Stolar, the former President and CEO of Sega America, disclosed that the Dreamcast was discontinued because of the new chairman of Sega, who wanted focus only on the software.

| Although the life of Dreamcast was quite shot, but still this gaming console is still regarded as the pioneer in the world of gaming consoles. It was the first console, which has a built-in modem and Internet for the support of online game playing. Even now, this console is supported through various releases of homebrew video games. In the year of 1997, Saturn was trying to settle and develop in North America, whereas Bernie Stolar, the president of Sega of America was trying to establish and develop Sega’s Japanese headquarters, in order to develop a new platform. The consortium of these two, tried and worked hard, in order to develop the console. |
Skunkworks, a group, which was leaded by the researcher of IBM, Tatsuo Yamamoto and another team Hideki Sato, the Sega Hardware engineer, worked together on the project of the console development. Both these groups started to experiment with the development of the prototype, separately and Sato and his group decided to select Hitachi SH4 processor architecture and the VideoLogic PowerVR2 graphics processor, whereas Yamamoto and his group members also opted SH4, but the hardware they used was, 3dfx. Eventually both these groups decided to use Sega’s design based on PowerVR.
Microsoft created the operating system, which was used by some of the models of Dreamcast, after working with Sega for 2 years. The production time period of this console was short and this is the reason why only few official models of Dreamcast were released. The models which were released in 1999 had weaker fan system and had gray tint, whereas the models which were released in 2000, came with stronger fan system, white colored and had laser disc reader, which was louder and faster. The processor of the system is a 200 MHz SH-4 along with a vector graphics engine, with an on-die 128-bit, 360 MIPS and 1.4 GFLOPS, which uses vector graphic engine.
This hardware is PowerVR2 CLX2 chipset, which is capable of the peak performance and tri-linear of 7 million polygons/second. The list of graphics hardware effects includes gouraud shading, z-buffering, anti-aliasing, per-pixel translucency sorting and bump mapping. Around 16.78 million colors are supported by this system and at 640x480 video resolution interlaced or progressive video scan is displayed, which enhances its picture quality to a greater extent.
Most of the models of Dreamcast included removable modems. The regular modem can be replaced with the separately sold, broadband adapter. There were many accessories, which were released by Dremacast, not only by Sega, but many third parties also released these accessories. Among the most popular and significant accessories, Dreamcast VGA adapter was at the top of the list, which enables the users to play games on computer display or on high-definition television sets and the memory card is also available with unique features including a screen, which helps in providing various functions for different games.
